Environmental Damages Fund (Environment Canada)

 

Description:
The Environmental Damages Fund (EDF) is a special holding or trust account to manage funds received as compensation for environmental damage. These funds may come from court orders, awards, out-of-court settlements and voluntary awards.

Who Can Apply:
non-government organizations, community-based environmental groups, aboriginal groups, universities, provinces, territories and municipalities.

Priority for funding is given to projects in the following four categories: Restoration of natural resources; Environmental quality improvement projects; Research and Development relating to environmental damage assessment and restoration; and Education related to pollution prevention and environmental quality improvement.

EcoAction Community Funding Program (Environment Canada)

Description:
EcoAction is an Environment Canada funding program that helps groups carry out projects that protect or improve the environment and/or increase environmental awareness and capacity in their community.

Who Can Apply:
Non-profit, non-government groups

Types of Projects Funded:
Funding is available for projects that: 1) address Environment Canada's priority issues of climate change, clean air, clean water, and/or nature; 2) have positive, measurable impacts on the natural environment, build the capacity of communities to take action on environmental issues, or a combination of both objectives; 3) provide opportunities for Canadians to take positive action at the community level; and 4) encourage people to be more environmentally responsible. The One-Tonne Challenge is a Government of Canada initiative designed to encourage Canadians to reduce their personal greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) emissions by one tonne per year (or 20 percent of the GHG emissions of an average Canadian). As a supporting partner of the One-Tonne Challenge, half of EcoAction's annual budget is directed to projects that involve GHG reductions (under the climate change priority). The other half of the budget supports the other three priorities mentioned above.

There are two application deadlines a year: February 1st and October 1st.

Suncor Energy Foundation Environment Fund

Description:
Through this fund, the Suncor Energy Foundation invests in programs that are related to the energy industry in which Suncor Energy Inc. operates and that address environmental issues of major national and local concern - issues such as sustainable development, climate change, air and water quality, and habitat conservation and reclamation.

Who Can Apply:
Canadian registered charities in the following communities where Suncor Energy Inc. has a business presence and an employee base: Calgary , Fort McMurray , Sarnia , and areas of central and northern Alberta , areas of northeastern British Columbia and southwestern Ontario .

Types of Projects Funded:
In the past, the Foundation has helped to purchase environmentally sensitive lands which are significant to our country. They've helped organizations work with schools and cities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become more energy efficient. Their funds have supported research and education programs that address issues such as climate change. As well, they've encouraged community and employee volunteers to work together in planting trees and natural vegetation.

Description:

Non-profit organizations registered as a society in Alberta .

The types of activities funded include: Applied research projects that result in practical information that would be shared with the public and benefit the environment; Sustainable practices that result in conservation of resources such as bioregionalism or lifestyle choices that protect the environment; Education projects that promote and increase public awareness and understanding of an environment issue; Projects that improve environmental quality; Preservation of wildlife habitat;
School ground naturalizations that are closely connected to the curriculum as defined by Alberta Learning;
Restoration or reclamation projects (native species only); Species protection projects; Waste minimization projects that promote the 4Rs (rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle).

Description:
The Alberta Real Estate Foundation supports real estate-related initiatives that enhance the industry and benefit the people of Alberta.

Who Can Apply:
Non-profit groups in Alberta

Types of Projects Funded:
All applicants must contact Mary Ann Houston, the Foundation's Grants Coordinator at mahouston@aref.ab.ca or 403-209-3621 to discuss their idea and obtain our application format prior to submission.

All projects must meet the basic guidelines listed below as well as the guidelines for the appropriate key funding area.

  • Relevant to the real estate industry
  • Enhances the profile of the Alberta real estate industry and the Foundation
  • Responds to a high priority need or issue
  • Builds capacity in the community or industry
  • Alberta-wide application or transportable from one area to another
  • Builds partnerships or provides leverage
  • Cost effective
  • Low maintenance: the project is completed on time and within budget
  • Capacity building


Projects must fit within the Foundation's Land Use and Environment Project Goals:

  • Builds industry and public capacity to safeguard land and owner/tenant interests in terms of due diligence
  • Preserves health and quality of life, especially in rural areas and smaller centres
  • Enables public bodies and citizens to appropriately respond to the pressures and consequences of change, growth and stagnation in their locality, including building conflict resolution skills.

Environment and land use projects must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • improves real estate transaction or ability to safeguard interests;
  • affects quality of life, environment or health issues;
    provides information that affects real estate sales and participants;
  • builds capacity to engage in democratic processes and resolve conflicts.


Note:
The Alberta Real Estate Foundation will not fund the following:

  • Retroactive projects;
  • Duplicative work;
  • Political or religious efforts;
  • Ongoing administrative costs;
  • Motivational presentations;
  • Deficit or debt retirement;
  • Individual, commercial or for-profit organizations;
  • Activities of a purely philanthropic nature.

Calgary Foundation


Description:
The Calgary Foundation, through grants from a broad range of funds, enables people, corporations, foundations and other organizations of all means to enrich our community forever.

Who Can Apply:
Canadian Registered Charitable Organizations or other "qualified donees" according to Canada Revenue Agency. Projects must be in, or of direct benefit to, residents of Calgary and the surrounding area.

Types of Projects Funded:
The Calgary Foundation prides itself on being a "360 degree grantmaker". This means grants are made through the Community Grants Program in all areas of the charitable sector including arts, environment, health, recreation, education, human services, community development, animal welfare and neighbourhoods.

$10,000 - $25,000

Description of Funding:
Varies. Last year, through the Foundation's Community Grants Program, more than $1.2 million was distributed to approximately 20 organizations in the area of environment and animal welfare.

Community Initiatives Program ( Province of Alberta - Alberta Lottery Fund)


Description:
The Community Initiatives Program (CIP) provides funds from the Alberta Lottery Fund to enhance and enrich project-based community initiatives throughout Alberta . Funding is based on local needs and priorities, in accordance with provincial guidelines.

Who Can Apply:
Eligible applicants include:

1. Registered community not-for-profit groups
2. Municipalities
3. First Nations or Metis Settlements
4. Social Services Sector or Regional Children's Authorities.

Community organizations that are not registered may have a sponsor apply on their behalf. The sponsor must be eligible under CIP funding criteria, and must take full legal and financial responsibility for the grant funds approved.

Types of Projects Funded:
CIP is intended to support project-based initiatives in the areas of: community services, recreation and sport, parks, arts and culture, libraries, health, education, social services, children's services, seniors' services, and environmental protection.

Range of Funding Available :
$25,000 - $100,000

Description of Funding:
Maximum CIP grant of $75,000 per project per fiscal year. Only one CIP application can be submitted for a specific project in each fiscal year (i.e. April 1 to March 31).

Total CIP funding of $30 million per year for three years (April 1, 2005 to March 31, 2008).

Deadline for application submissions:
Applications are processed throughout the year. The final deadline for receiving applications at the CIP office is the close of business March 1, 2008.

Conservation Fund ( Alberta Conservation Association (ACA))

Description:
At the Alberta Conservation Association (ACA), we believe it is our responsibility to join and support the collective effort to conserve, protect and enhance Alberta 's natural biological resources. One of the ways in which we do this is to make grants to our partners. Grants made to partners are intended to enhance and supplement ACA activities.

ACA is a Delegated Administrative Organization incorporated under the Societies Act of Alberta. The Alberta - Minister of Environment has delegated the operation of certain programs to the ACA. Powers, duties and responsibilities are as indicated in the Wildlife Act, Part 9, 97(1) and AR 143/97 Wildlife Regulation, Schedule 2.

Who Can Apply:
Any organization or individual can apply if they have a suitable project. Alberta Conservation Association staff and Alberta Government Sustainable Resource Development staff are not eligible to apply to the fund.

Types of Projects Funded:
Projects that meet and further the ACA mission: to conserve, protect and enhance Alberta's biological natural resources; projects that contribute to the priorities as outlined in the Strategic Business Plan 2004-2007; priority is given to projects that demonstrate a "self help" attitude. i.e. Partner contributions and matched funding dollars; research (academic) projects that clearly meet ACA funding criteria and demonstrate initiatives, which are likely to have a wider relevance and further the practice of conservation; consideration may be given to funding "project staff" wages to a maximum of two years. (project staff wage money must clearly demonstrate a "self help" attitude).

Green Building Grant Program

2005 PROGRAM

The Green Building Grant Program was established by the Real Estate Foundation and Vancity Credit Union to minimize the impacts of climate change and improve sustainable land use practices by supporting green building initiatives in British Columbia . The overall goal of the funding program is to reduce CO2 emissions resulting from settlement activity. The Program was launched on June 2, 2004 .

Each year, the Program will provide one or more grants (up to $50,000 each) to qualified recipients, totaling not more than $100,000. Applications will be accepted from charitable organizations, not-for-profit organizations, or cooperatives.

Description:

VanCity Enviro Fund

Description:
The VanCity EnviroFund was conceived as a way to support community initiatives that address local environmental concerns in a positive, constructive, and creative manner. The purpose of the EnviroFund is to encourage positive, actionable solutions to our local environmental concerns.

Sustainable Development Innovations Fund (SDIF)

Description:
The SDIF provides funding for the development, implementation and promotion of environmental innovation and sustainable development projects conducted in Manitoba or of benefit to Manitoba . The SDIF is targeted at the sustainability of Manitoba 's environment, economy, human health and social well-being and supportive of environmentally sustainable economic growth.

Who Can Apply:
Municipalities, local governments, including Community Councils, and First Nations communities; private and non-profit organizations; youth groups and community associations; and educational institutions.
Individuals and groups excluded from the above list may submit a joint application with an eligible applicant.

Types of Projects Funded:
Projects must be innovative, contribute to the protection, enhancement, conservation, and/or rehabilitation of Manitoba 's environment, be ecologically sound, promote a sustainable approach, demonstrate clear environmental benefits and take into account the benefits to the community and the economy. Projects will address one or more of the Fund's priority areas or demonstrate measurable progress toward achieving the Fund's objectives, have clear plan for future use, involve youth where possible, have an educational component and make provisions for the dissemination of information, and/or be replicable. The Fund's priority areas include: environmental technology innovations and demonstration; northern community development and environmental issues; sustainable community development; sustainable agricultural practices; ecosystem conservation; understanding our environment; eco-tourism; and water.

Description:
The fund provides monies to support a wide range of environmental initiatives under the following categories: protection, restoration, sustainable development, education, conservation, and beautification.

Who Can Apply:
Community groups, New Brunswick municipalities, non-profit New Brunswick organizations and institutions which are furthering sustainable development.

Types of Projects Funded:
Examples of funded projects include: community waste management programs, wetland and habitat improvement, water quality protection and restoration and environmental education programs.

Deadline for application submissions:
A public call for proposals will be made in the fall. It usually takes about three months for a project to be approved. Application forms, along with guidelines to assist you to fill out the forms, are available from all offices of the Department of the Environment and Local Government. Description:
The aim of the Go-For-Green Fund is to combine active living with action on the environment. The fund provides grants to non-profit community and provincial groups, and municipalities doing outdoor recreational activities that promote both active living and the health of Nova Scotia 's natural environment.

Non-profit community groups; municipal and provincial organizations and agencies in Nova Scotia .

Types of Projects Funded:
Examples include: Naturalization of school grounds, community parks and green spaces; active gardening that engages in environmentally sound practices, and active, healthy living; active transportation infrastructure endeavors; and environmental interpretation projects that combine active outdoor living and outdoor recreation.

The Foundation will consider funding the following activities to achieve the programme goals:

Ontario Trillium Foundation

Description:
As one of Canada 's leading charitable grant-making foundations, the Ontario Trillium Foundation works with others to make strategic investments to build healthy, caring and economically strong Ontario communities. The Foundation makes grants that have province-wide impact as well as grants in local communities across Ontario .

Who Can Apply:
The Ontario Trillium Foundation will accept funding applications from any one of the following:
a) Registered charities.
b) Organizations incorporated as not-for-profits in a Canadian jurisdiction.
c) Unincorporated branches or chapters of charitable or incorporated not-for-profit organizations. Branches, chapters or member agencies of a provincial network must submit a signed letter from the provincial organization authorizing the application and accepting responsibility for the Trillium grant.
d) First Nations initiatives through a Band Council resolution.
e) Métis Charter communities.
f) Collaboratives of organizations, containing at least one eligible member. A collaborative is a group of two or more organizations working to achieve a common goal. There must be mutual benefit, shared decision-making, and accountability among members and to the community they serve. Collaborative members will demonstrate how they will work together as part of their application. For Trillium application purposes, one incorporated or otherwise eligible organization must take the lead as the applicant on behalf of the collaborative. Collaboratives may include unincorporated groups.

Types of Projects Funded:
Ontario Trillium Foundation grants are awarded to fund capital, operating and/or specific project costs in support of:
-Arts & Culture
-Environment
-Human & Social Services, and
-Sports & Recreation.

Grants are used by eligible charitable and not-for-profit organizations to assist initiatives that increase the capacity and effectiveness of community organizations, encourage the continued growth of volunteerism, promote partnerships, support access and meet the diverse needs of Ontarians.

Range of Funding Available:
$100,000 +

Deadline for application submissions:
March 01,July 01 and November 01 of each year

The George Cedric Metcalf Charitable Foundation


Description:
The program seeks to maintain the ecological health and integrity of Canada 's natural systems, and to strengthen the relationship between communities and their natural environments. To achieve these fundamental goals the program will focus on three core areas: maintaining biodiversity in Canada 's southern-most landscapes; preserving healthy northern forests; and building capacity within environmental groups. As well the Foundation will support new and emerging issues with a current focus on managing urban growth and development in southern Ontario .

Who Can Apply:
Only registered charitable organizations can apply.

Types of Projects Funded:
Proposals for land securement, land-use planning, community engagement, scientific research, mapping and conservation planning, public education, stewardship and restoration programs. The Foundation does not support individuals, for-profit organizations or organizations whose main purpose is political activity. The Foundation does not ordinarily support capital projects, endowments, deficits or scholarships.

$100,000 +

Deadline for application submissions:
The Foundation will review applications for the Environment Program twice annually, once in the spring and once in the fall. Interested organizations should first send a letter of inquiry to the Foundation by 1 November 2004 or 2 May 2005. Foundation staff will review letters of interest and identify those proposals it wishes to pursue.

Toronto Atmospheric Fund


Description:
The Toronto Atmospheric Fund (TAF) was established in 1992 to finance local initiatives to combat global warming and improve air quality in Toronto . TAF's mandate is to promote: Global climate stabilization through the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions such as CO2 and methane; Local air quality; Energy conservation and efficiency; Public understanding of global warming and its implications for the urban environment; "Carbon sinks" such as Toronto's urban forests that absorbs CO2 from the air; Related scientific research and technology development; and Partnerships with non-governmental organizations, other levels of government, business and academic institutions.

Who Can Apply:
Non-profit organizations, registered charities, public institutions, schools and City of Toronto agencies and departments. To be eligible, an applicant must be located within the City of Toronto . Exceptions may be made if TAF deems the proposed project to provide compelling direct benefits to residents of Toronto or to the City of Toronto .

Types of Projects Funded:
TAF provides both grants and loans for projects that address its funding priorities in the areas of transportation, green energy, energy efficiency and public education.

$25,000 - $100,000

Description of Funding:
TAF offers two grant funding programs - the Business Development Program and the Incubation Program. A wide range of projects addressing TAF's funding priorities will be considered for funding including, but not limited to policy development strategies, new programs, services, projects and technology demonstrations. All funding is allocated through open, competitive processes.

Integrated Enhancement Program (PMVI Hydro-Québec)

Description:
The program is offered only to the collectivities receiving new Hydro-Québec equipment (line or sub-station) on their territory.

The program gives eligible organizations access to an integrated enhancement budget for any new project for energy transportation undergoing environmental assessment under the Québec's Environment Quality Act.

It seeks to promote harmonization between development and environmental protection and enhancement and enable organizations to design and develop environmental projects, called initiatives, in order to protect or enhance their own environment.

Who Can Apply:
This program is closely linked to Quebec Hydro's new transportation projects (lines and stations) across the province of Quebec . Only communities receiving new Quebec Hydro equipment are eligible. Specifically, they must be organizations representing a community and administering an area; in other words, only municipalities, regional county municipalities (RCMs) and native communities are eligible.

Types of Projects Funded:
Initiatives related to the following aspects are eligible:
a) Improvements to the environment and some municipal infrastructure (e.g. management of cleared areas, property improvement);
b) Regional development;
c) Maintenance of major public infrastructure (e.g. municipal libraries); and
d) Quebec Hydro equipment (e.g. underground laying of distribution lines).
